This post is brought to you by the letter:
The tenth symbol of the Amharic alphabet is called BET and is equivalent to the sound of the letter B in English. The printed letter looks like the first symbol upside down, same as the handwritten version. The seven orders of this symbol are very easy to write.
Here is the table with the printed letter, handwritten letter and pronunciation, and a few examples. The animations were made according to the instructions in the book Writing and Reading Amharic and the sounds are from the site Amharic Online. Phonetics symbols according to David Appleyard.

Here is the quiz for the tenth letter of the alphabet:
Note: I’ve told before that as a general rule, in the sixth order of the Feedel symbols the vowel ï is not pronounced when it is located at the end of a word as in (bet / house), but there are exceptions. These occur when a word that ends in two consonants is followed by another word that starts in a consonant, in this case the vowel ï must be pronounced. For example in
(andï tämari / a student) the ï is pronounced at the end of the first word, compared with
(and astämari /a teacher) where the ï is mute.
In the same way, when the vowel ï is in the middle of the word, it should be pronounced, but as you can see in same of the examples sometimes you only pronounce the consonant . For example in (bïrtu) you only pronounce the r in the middle letter, same as in
. The same thing happens in
where only the n is pronounced. There are pronunciation rules for these cases but they are complicated and since they are not the norm, I think it’s better to memorize these special pronunciations.
Next week, the letter T.
