This post is brought to you by the letter: 16-alf1

The sixteenth symbol of the Amharic alphabet is called ‘ÄLF   and the first order  sounds like an open letter A, similar to sound of an A in Spanish.
The seven orders of this symbol represent the vowels of the Amharic language, and the first and fourth orders sound the same. There is no symbol associated with the vowel "ä" alone. The 16th and 21st symbols of the alphabet sound the same, that is to say that there are al least two possible representations for each vowel and four in the case of the "a". The printed an handwritten letter are similar.
Here is the table with the printed letter, handwritten letter and pronunciation, and a few examples. The animations were made according to the instructions in the book Writing and Reading Amharic and the sounds are from the site Amharic Online. Phonetic symbols according to David Appleyard.
