Besides the 33 traditional symbols of the Amharic alphabet, there is another one that is equivalent to the letter V in the Latin alphabet. This symbol is used in words derived from foreign languages, like the words “university”, “television”, etc. It’s used to describe things with non-Amharic names. In the alphabetical order it usually appears after the last symbol or sometimes right after the tenth symbol or letter B.
Here is the table with some examples but this time I didn’t add the sound just because I couldn’t find examples spoken by a native Ethiopian, but basically the sound is like a letter V followed by the vowel that corresponds to each order.
The animations were made according to the instructions in the book Writing and Reading Amharic and the phonetic notation is the one used by David Appleyard.
