Unity Garden by Nana EkowFrère Jacques, frère Jacques,
Dormez-vous? Dormez-vous?
Sonnez les matines! Sonnez les matines!
Din, dan, don. Din, dan, don.
Frère Jacques, French Version

Are you sleeping, are you sleeping
Brother John, brother John,
Morning bells are ringing, morning bells are ringing,
Ding, ding, dong. Ding, ding, dong.
Frère Jacques, English Version

We all know the famous children’s song Frère Jacques, but very few know the Amharic version of it.
Feven loves music, and specially to sing songs, so she is learning many songs and rhymes, mostly in English, some in Spanish, but this is our first try to sing a song in Amharic. She already knows the French, English and Spanish versions of the song, but now I’m trying to teach her the Amharic one.
She still messes up all the languages and has a preference for the English version but I hope she will learn it soon.
If you want to teach it to your children, here is an approximate transliteration of the Amharic lyrics:

Wendime Yakob, Wendime Yakob
Tegnag Wey, Tegnag Wey
Dewil Tedewele, Dewil Tedewele
Tenesa, Tenesa

You can find a longer version of the song in Amharic in Volume 1 of The Life of Childhood CD:

The life of childhood - Vol 1
(BTW, the drawing on the cover of the CD is a bit scary…)
