I posted a while ago about the little odyssey we went through to make the passports for our children and I recently hinted that we were not finished with it yet. Here is how the story follows.
About three weeks ago, Dylan’s passport arrived in the mail, but we’ve got no news about Feromsa and Feven. Oh-oh…
Three days later two envelopes arrived each with a letter saying that the passports of my two Ethiopian children couldn’t be issued due to the lack of documentation.
Just what I thought it would happen!. “The Man” never fails, so predicable that it’s even boring!
If it wasn’t because we REALLY need the passports, I would still be laughing.
But it’s no joke, we are in their hands and they won’t let us go until the are satisfied that my children deserve their passports.
They are now asking for the original adoption decree and a proof of of having entering legally in the US, like a green card, or a passport with a visa stamp.
I don’t know who knows for sure what you need to get a passport for two children born abroad from naturalized citizens, but the people working at the passport office don’t seem to agree with each other. The not-so-nice lady at our local office didn’t accept the adoption decree, she even said that it wasn’t necessary, but she asked for OUR proof of citizenship instead! I guess she didn’t have the slightest idea of the papers needed…
This time we sent their green cards and both of the original adoption decrees, the Ethiopian one and the American and crossed our fingers that this time they have ALL what they need.
Let me tell you that we are kind of nervous that all the important documentation that proves our citizenship and legal adoption is out of our hands, who knows where. I don’t feel comfortable without my papers. Fortunately we don’t live in Arizona (and we don’t plan to visit anytime soon), but I won’t sleep well until we get our papers back.
As soon as we get the passports we will start the process to get them the certificate of citizenship… just in case, you know.
Are we going to get the passports this time? Will “The Man” need anything else? Are my children American enough? Stay tuned…
