The Day of the African Child is celebrated every June 16th to honor the memory of hundreds of black children killed in the Soweto uprising of 1976 in South Africa. They day was set aside by the then Organization of the African Unity (OAU), now African Union (AU).
Here in Portland, an event has been organized for this coming Saturday June 27th.
It’s going to take place at the World Forestry Center where the main plaza is going to be transformed in an African Market, where you can buy a traditional dress, listen to music or taste African food.
The event is sponsored, among others, by Haranbee Centre, Ethiopian Orphan Relief, Mercy Corps, and World Affairs Council of Oregon.
So, if you are in town this weekend, you can go there and enjoy this celebration.
